Watercolor block printing is a kind of literati culture and originally used by the literati for"icing on the cake“in making note-papers,which can be filed together into a note-paper book.With the passage of time,these practical "desk things" of literati gradually upgrade to the stationery for "enjoyment to eyes and ears".Yangzhou has always been a place for numerous literati,and its geographical features imperceptibly affect many local crafts.Woodblock printing is dependent on the natural environment and climate in Yangzhou for development and survival,Watercolor block printing of Yangzhou is one unique skill in woodblock printing of Yangzhou.The production crafts silently maintain traditional local cultural characteristics of Yangzhou in the heritage.Based on the important historical and cultural heritage of Yangzhou woodblock printing,this thesis discusses the traditional crafts and related problems.Taking the general crafts of watercolor block printing in Yangzhou as the starting point,this thesis aims at solving the following problems from the field of art and cultural anthropology.Firstly,what are the specific craft process of watercolor block printing in Yangzhou and what are the core techniques and characteristics of this craft?Secondly,what watercolor block printing objects are there in Yangzhou,what are the creative concepts of the craftsmen while giving the enjoyment for beauty,and are there any common craft features?Thirdly,in the historical heritage,what meanings does the craft bear,and have there been any changes?The creation actually implies "ingenuity",and what language forms are hidden in the process of craft development?Under the impact of modern printing,what's the current situation of watercolor block printing?Is there any harm?Based on the research data,this thesis summarizes the technological process and methods from the investigation practice of watercolor block printing craft in Yangzhou.On the other hand,it analyzes the existing craftworks,makes some appreciation and interpretation to reveal the inherent laws of this craft.Finally,this thesis derives some problems in current craft research in order to discovering the relationship of social structure.After analysis,the following four conclusions are drawn in this thesis.Firstly,watercolor block printing craft has a relatively stable program although it's sophisticated,and it will undergo some dynamic changes with the internal and external changes.Secondly,there is a social motivation for the existence of this craft,and it is the creation behavior,artistic behavior and social behavior.Thirdly,the craft process promotes the derivation of the craft results,i.e.they are directly proportional to each other,and the craft improvement will certainly affect the market demand for craftworks.Once the craft has transformed into art,craftworks will also become artworks.Fourthly,the craft creation can not be separated from the traditions,but only by breaking through the traditions can it not be constrained by the environment.
