Polymer microspheres as one of the most common polymer morphology were widely used in chromatographic separation, drug delivery and other fields. At present, the preparation methods of polymer microspheres are also complex and diverse.Among them, seed polymer polymerization is easy to control, and the obtained polymer microspheres have uniform particle size and diverse morphology. It has been one of the most popular methods for preparing polymer microspheres.Although the method has been extensively studied in the past few decades,it is still one of the hotspots in the preparation of polymer microspheres due to the variety of factors affecting seed emulsion polymerization. In this study, the different types of swelling agent were introduced into seed emulsion polymerization. The effect on the morphology of the polymer microspheres was studied. And the size of obtained micropsheres was uniform. The microspheres were successfully applied to chromatographic separation. This study includes the following two aspects:1.Porous poly(glycidylmethacrylate-divinyl)(PGMA-co-DVB)microspheres with an average particle size of 4.6 ?m were successfully prepared by seed emulsion polymerization, followed by modification with diazo resin(DR).Three porogens(toluene, cyclohexanol and dodecanol)were used in the preparation process to obtain porous microspheres with different morphologies. The polymer microspheres prepared from toluene as porogen have a large specific surface area and are well pore structure and were used for further modification. The hydroxyl groups of the polymer microspheres are hydrolyzed to the hydroxyl group and then reacted with DR.After treatment with UV light, the hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups and the DR were converted into covalent bonds by the unique photochemical reaction of DR.And the porous PGMA-DVB-DR microspheres were used as the stationary phase of high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).DR-modified PGMA-DVB stationary phase can be used for mixed mode separation mechanisms, including reversed phase(RP)and hydrophilic interactions. The baseline separation of benzene homologues was achieved by using porous PGMA-DVB-DR microspheres as the stationary phase. In addition, the by-product acetic acid can be rapidly separated from N-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole product. In addition, the DR-modified particles may be expected to be an alternative tool for organic acids separation due to the presence of secondary amino groups.2.Surfactant Span 80 as a swelling agent was introduced into seed emulsion polymerization for the first time. The uniform PGMA-DVB polymer microspheres with microporous structure, hollow structure and macroporous structure were successfully prepared by adjusting the addtion of Span 80 in the polymerization system. And the formation mechanism of polymer microspheres with different structures was discussed in the study. It provides a new preparation method for microporous, hollow and macroporous polymer microspheres.
