The Reproduction Of Traditional Culture In The Landscape Design Of Taierzhuang Ancient City

With the rapid development of the economy and culture and the gradual acceleration of urbanization in China, a great many cities are rising straight on the ground. On one hand, the massive construction of modern cities has helped ameliorate the living environment and improve the living standard of city dwellers. On the other hand, those living in prosperous bustle cities are still overwhelmed with a sense of loneliness and emptiness. The reason for such as phenomenon can be summarized as the fact that the traditional cultural contexts of these cities are damaged in the process of city spatial expansion and old city reconstruction, especially for those cities rich in traditional residences and historical/cultural relics. Traditions with local specialties which nurtured the locals are gradually disappearing. Faced with so severe a situation, people have started to make reflections and seek a spiritual homeland in the international context, to pay more attention to their particular cultural roots, and to explore lifestyles applicable to local cultural landscapes. As a carrier which could best present a city's features, City Landscape Design, has been attached more importance and are widely applied in the process of city transformation. A good city landscape which can serve as a city's name card could help those living in the city feel its traditional marks by observing and experiencing, which in turn could inspire city dwellers' senses of identity and proud as well as invigorate a city's vitality.As a city with a lasting history and rich culture, Taierzhuang was reconstructed after a severe damage by warfare. The reason behind its success lies in the inheriting and regenerating of its cultural context. This paper takes the reconstruction of Taierzhuang Ancient Town as a case to explore the conflicts and integration between new approaches, new concepts and new materials and traditional spirits. The paper starts with an analysis of the protecting and inheriting of old city's cultural context with Landscape Design theories, and then a close analysis of the theoretical foundation is made followed by a presentation of landscape reconstruction cases. Under the guidance of innovative concepts, the author of this paper attempts to explore the design concepts which are in line with the development of times: to make an objective study on the ancient city protection and the traditional cultural contexts inheriting by integrating the cultural quintessence with modern values, associating traditional design concepts with modern architecture techniques, and combining theories of psychology, sociology, cultural studies, architecture and planning sciences. The paper makes a summary the experience on ancient city reconstruction, cultural inheriting and economy construction, with the aim of rendering relevant references for the ancient city reconstruction and cultural context inheriting in other cities of China.
