Smart substation is the basic link of the smart grid and the most critical link. With the basic requirements of total station information digitization, communication platform networking and information sharing standardization, it can collect the basic operation data, execute the corresponding commands and automatically realize functions including information collection, measurement, protection, measurement and monitoring etc. The smart substation can achieve the comprehensive interactions of equipment information, operation strategy and power dispatching, realize the whole-lifecycle integrated management in basic state, collect and share the real-time operation data of power grids, support the grid real-time control, intelligent adjustment and various advanced application, and ensure safe and stable operation of power grids of all levels.The paper focuses on the practical design of 220 k V smart substation. The substation site and form are selected in accordance with negative charge requirement and regional power supply environment, and also take the regulations of relevant departments and close to the wire terminal into consideration. Finally the site is determined to be located in South Rizhao Wulian county west about 15 km, northwest of Jietou county about 3 km, west of South Xiyu village about 1000 m, north of the concrete path from South Xiyu village to Dawa village. The land of the site is construction land, thus civil dispute can be avoided. The final wiring plan of inner layout is determined with reference to the current power transformation technology,the objective of maintaining power supply reliability and the design of state grid: the current project and the advanced project of 220 KV adopt the double-bus connection,equipped with buscouple breaker; the current project and the advanced project of110 KV adopt double-bus connection, equipped with breaker; the current project of35 KV uses single-bus with subsection connection, equipped with a subsection breaker and two set of bus equipment; the advanced project of 35 KV employs single-bus with three subsection connection equipped with two subsection breakers and three sets of bus equipments. Two sets of main transformers are adopted in line with the city power supply, the substation capacity and the load calculation, each for 180 MVA capacit y in this current project, and each for 180 MVA in that advanced project. On this basis,the proper reactive power compensation should be taken in the low voltage side. The short-circuit current calculations are made for all the electrical components selection.In addition, all the electrical equipments chosen under normal operation conditions are checked with three-phrase short-circuit condition, including circuit breaker,isolating switch, current transformer, voltage transformer, lightning arrester and the outlet and inlet lines.The main electrical connection diagram is attached.The basic situation of smart substation has been explored in the thesis. Based on the design and construction of the 220 k V smart substation, the thesis has made a design plan of the main wiring and secondary protection. For primary equipment, the inner layout of the substation is designed with reference to the distance requirements in Design Manual of Electrical Power Engineering. At last the layout chart is attached.The main wiring of this substation has been optimized in arrangement with consideration of the current research and construction situation of smart substation pilot projects. The design principle of the smart substation include: people-oriented,environmental friendly, safe and reliable, simple and practical, innovative and optimal and resource-saving. It also highlights the features of saving energy, treating environment friendly, covering less land, reducing building area with room integration and saving investment. Besides, an implementation plan of the project is put forward in combination with the current application and implementation situation of domestic smart substations.
