The fiber reinforced composite material strut in cable dome is studied in this paper based on the research of high performance fiber reinforced composite material-cable dome system.Both axial compression test and finite element numerical analysis of pultruded GFRP and CFRP rods under simple support condition are performed.The strengthening of the end of FRP strut which is a weak link easy to be damaged will have great influence on its ultimate bearing capacity and failure mode.In this paper,a reinforcement method with good reinforcement effect and convenient preparation is put forward after the comparison of four GFRP short-bar tests with different strengthening ends is carried out,which lays the foundation for the stability test of long rod.Considering the unavoidable geometric imperfections of FRP members,the method of calculating the initial defects of two kinds of rods is analyzed by ABAQUS software.The finite element model of this two kinds of compression bar is established and the validity of the finite element analysis with the introduction of the initial defects combined with the two-dimensional Hashin criterion is verified by comparing results of the compression test and the finite element.The failure modes of CFRP and GFRP rods are analyzed by finite element analysis.The results show that there are three kinds of failure modes with the increase of the slenderness ratio:the strength failure,the inelastic instability failure and the elastic destabilization failure.The ultimate bearing capacity decreases with the increase of slenderness ratio and decreases fast when slenderness ratio is small while decreases slowly when slenderness ratio is large.The influence of diameter to thickness ratio on ultimate bearing capacity will be weakened with the increase of slenderness ratio.The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the rod increases linearly with the fiber content increasing.At last,the application range of the Euler formula being used to calculate the compressive ultimate strength of the pultruded CFRP under simple support condition is given by ABAQUS numerical analysis and and the relationship between the compressive ultimate strength and the ? of the pultruded CFRP under simple support conditions is summarized.
