Mankind bridges the gap between art and technology which were divided into two individual categories for a long time through architecture.Different natural environments,culture and ideology correspond to different styles of architecture in various countries and regions.As a style of architecture arose in the dawn of Industrial Revolution in early twentieth century in Germany,Modernist Architecture boldly abandoned over decorated details used in classical architecture,pushed the application of both functionalism and rationalism in architecture subversively to the great extend while adapted to the demand of modern German society.In this paper,German history and culture was studied from the aspect of German architecture.The origin of Modernist Architecture,Bauhaus,was fully researched.Chapter one reviewed the period of its beginning and development combining with era background.In Chapter two,the ideological origins of Bauhaus were presented,and the architectural theories of representative modernist architects such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe were introduced.Three representative Modernist Architecture: Glashaus designed by Bruno Taut,Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe,and Villa Savoye designed by Le Corbusier were chosen to elaborate the characteristics,core theories and design forms of Modernist Architecture.Finally,Chapter three dived right into advantages and disadvantages of Modernist Architecture based on previous two chapters.Both architectural aesthetics and social-economic significance of Bauhaus were summarized,and the interaction between Modernist Architecture and development of market economy was evaluated.Also Postmodernism,a kind of style which extended further and made improvements on the basis of Modernism,were briefly discussed.
