This thesis will research into English V-edly adverbs from the perspective of semantics and semantic content and semantic structure, with the aim of exploring the translation of these adverbs. As a type of complex adverb, V-edly adverb is formed with a verb and the suffix –ed and–ly morphologically, they are complex. Compared with other simplex and complex adverbs, such as those formed with an adjective with –ly, V-edly adverb is more complex for containing a verb, which bring to them the semantic structure and semantic content of verbs. While Chinese adverbs, for lack of morphological changes, cannot correspond to those V-edly adverbs in translation. Therefore, there may be some difficulties in translating such adverbs. In addition, few attentions have been paid to the V-edly adverbs in semantic analysis or English-Chinese translation. Given that V-edly adverbs are special in form and meaning and difficult in translation, and no present researches have noticed these adverbs, I will research into them attempting to find out the research method and translation techniques of such adverbs. This thesis started from a full analysis of the V-edly adverbs. Firstly, based on the morphological analysis and theories of English event semantics, the author analyzed the form and meanings of V-edly adverbs to reveal the formation and encoding information, and I categorized them. By doing so, a way of viewing such adverbs is offered. Then, the author explored the realization of the conceptual semantic information in English-Chinese translation.Lastly, the techniques in some sentences extracted from the COCA corpus are applied. The empirical data used in this research came from Corpus of Contemporary American English,Diachronic English-Chinese Parallel Corpus(DECPC),and jukuu(only some authoritative examples are used, such as some dictionary examples or examples extracted from some literature materials)?Firstly, the first 100 most frequent words ending with –(e)dly are extracted(appendix 1),then V-edly adverbs(appendix 2) are chosen. And the example sentences and translations from COCA are extracted(parts: appendix 3). Then the author used the example sentences and corresponding translations from DECPC to observe and describe the translation of V-edly adverbs.Next, the V-edly adverbs extracted from COCA are analyzed and categorized, in order to explore the feasible way of viewing these adverbs. Finally, apply the present way of analysis and translation methods to examples containing V-edly adverbs from COCA.Conclusions:V-edly adverbs are complex in form and rich in meaning. Morphologically, V-edly adverbcombines a verb and two suffixes,-(e)d and –ly. –(e)d can be used as participle suffix or adjective suffix;and the verbs with internal temporal structures can choose arguments and contains semantic content and structure, while Chinese, lack of morphological changes, has low lexicalization, can only use the compositional ways to encode the semantic information, therefore there may be various ways to encode the semantic information in Chinese.
