The inheritance and development of Chinese paintings since the awareness of differences between flower-and-bird paintings and the paintings on flowers and birds occurred since Tang Dynasty,which was also the period during which the paintings were formed as a professional branch.Song Dynasty was the development period of fine brush works of flower-and-bird paintings,during which time Cui Bai movement on the changing of styles began to appear.The ink-flower and ink-bird style in Yuan Dynasty,from Wang Yuan to Zhang Zhong's masterpieces gradually manifested the procedure that the style of Chinese paintings slowly shifted from court style to literati style,from fine brushwork to freely expression.Lin Liang lived in the Ming Dynasty,during which time the brushwork flower-and-bird painting began to flourish.His representation on the feathers was mostly regarded as being creative.He tried to summarize the different kinds of birds' feathers and formed a system.He was also influenced by the Nan Song court style paintings and zen style simplified brushwork paintings.His expressive form was directly from the ink-flower and ink-bird style from Yuan Dynasty.There were three color tones that Lin Liang used to represent bird feathers.Dark tone:he used the skill of freely brushwork to form artistic againts effect to make it look quite clear.Grey tone:He drawed some dots according to the features of the bird and intentionally brightened the ink tone to form a contrast in order to enrich the artwork.Light tone:He used this way to contour the object with some light ink.Trees and stones were used as the form of mountain-and-water paintings.This is a way of abstraction,which was made up of dot,line and surface.It was not merely the emphasize on imitating,but to emphasize on the feeling and expressive style.Compared to the fine brushwork flower-and-bird paintings,Lin Liang's style did not need the audiences to tell from the species of the birds,but to sense the expressive power and skill of them.All in all,Ling Liang was one of the creative artist of brushwork flower-and-bird paintings in Ming Dynasty.He had significant influence toward the next generation on Chinese ink paintings.Since the artworks of Ling Liang,Shen Zhou,Wen Zhengming toward Chen Chun,the development of Chinese flower-and-bird paintings never stopped.Xu Wei came to the peak of Chinese brushwork flower-and-bird painting in Ming Dynasty.From Zhu Da to Qi Baishi,they all had some influence from Lin Liang explicitly or implicitly.It is doubtless that Lin Liang is the great master that influenced a generation of artists.
