I make a comparative study on Western still life paintings and Chinese flower-and-bird paintings in this thesis so as to appreciate those techniques of expressions of similar themes through different medium.Methodologically,I first make a brief review of the history of both still life painting and bird-flower painting. And then,I make comparative study between some paintings of Impressionism,Shanghai School and some representative artistic works.Lastly,I focus on the performance taste and aesthetic similarities and differences reflected in the still life and bird-flower paintings of Manet and Wu Changshuo.Through study,I find that Chinese painters attach more importance to psychological suggestions and the techniques of expression of using images to show their aspiration, and their disposition of the painting mainly coming from fantasy. However, western painters pay more attention to is the ideal beauty and the respect to the real life.In my opinion, both oil paintings and traditional Chinese paintings have their own advantages in showing similar themes. In all ages, there are always some artists who create works embodying times spirit combined with their own background, which enriches and prolongs the art of history. What's more, various painting medium directly influence the art progress.
