This paper will focus on discussing and comparing Cubism and Dadaism during the early stage of Modernism period-Through comparing and analyzing the relative backgrounds and works of these two art schools,we will try to see the linguistic difference between the"analyticity",of Cubism and"trandomness"of Dadaism.To mark them as two types of speech,in linguistic viewpoint,we try to decipher the basis of this two language,and draw out the distinction between "art of visuality" and "art of physicality".Although analytical language of Cubism still belongs to representational language system,it broke the tradition of naturalism.To visualize the rational cognition acquired by analyzing and processing images of reality in human brain,the Cubists established a sort of "artificial"language.By using this artificial language,the Cubists try to decompose the real space into the smallest units,and reconstruct a new form.This language system verifies Russell's viewpoints of logicism-empirical world is the mechanical collection of many isolated atomic facts,and logical analysis is the approach to comprehend any proposition till there is nothing to analyze.Under the influence of the World War I,Dadaists considered that the war is a disaster caused by rationality and logic.Therefore,we can say that Dada is connected with anti-intellectualism,while,on the other hand,it develops into another kind of "wisdom":a humorous,random,naive,unconscious and abiogenetic art form with senses of spirituality.Under the cognition of phenomenology,the appearance and experience of objective things are unreliable.The belief of objective existence should be terminated,and the essence should be observed through "meditation".Meditation,here,can be understand as an unconscious,random action.Thereby,analytical artistic language is the product of logic and cognition,it tries to form conceptual understanding in brain through "observation" and to present such understanding.Random language is the physical result of activating the body instinct.The two types of language bases on different material foundation.Analytical language hinges on retina and brain,while random language ties up with tactus of limbs and nerves.Meanwhile,the contents expressed by them are different.Analytical language presents concepts,cognition and logic which are information processed by brain,whereas random language shows emotions,feelings,subconsciousness and unconsciousness,which are human instinct and intuition.Therefore,We can say that a split development between the two artistic approaches--formalized image in space corresponding with visuality and physical real substance in time corresponding with physicality,has already been reflected in the early-stage art of modernism.The two approaches can be understood dialectically as two sides of the same coin,that is to say,they reciprocate each other,and they are inseparable.
