A Comparative Study Of Russian And Chinese "death" Euphemisms

“Death” is one of humanity's most tragic things in life, is one of the greatest fears of all mankind. The word “death” is always accompanied with the emotions that people would not want to experience. That is why many people try their hard to avoid saying or hearing about it, but in order to ensure the verbal communication progress going smoothly, the "death" euphemism has born. The number of “death” euphemisms in the “A Dream of Red Mansions” is stunning large. The confusing death of Qin Keqing, the sad and moving death of Lin Daiyu, and the frustrating death of Jia Jing show us the flexibility and variability of Chinese "death" euphemism.The “death” euphemism in the two Chinese versions of the “A Dream of Red Mansions” that was translated by Panasyuk is different and intriguing. The comparison of the two versions will help us to understand the translator's purpose and writing style. And the art of language will be shown from them that are simple and complex, outright and elaborate.Regarded as a linguistic and cultural phenomenon euphemism is popular in all kinds of languages, and plays an important role in people's daily communication. The using of euphemism also aroused concerns of linguists, at home and abroad, that both had published many articles about euphemisms.The purpose of this study is to discuss the national cultural differences between Russia and China on the basis of the comparison of the “death” euphemisms both in Russian and Chinese. Based on the main materials which include “Dictionary of Chinese euphemism” by Zhang Gonggui, and “ Dictionary of Russian euphemism” by Senichkina and two version of “A Dream of Red Mansions” by Panasyuk this text analyzed the causes of “death” euphemisms in Russian and Chinese by definition, classification and approach.With the gradual development of the comparison, the similarities and differences between the two languages on “death” euphemisms become even clearer. Contrast both in forms and social background show us how the people in both countries view death. And what kind of effect the Buddhism, Taoism, Paganism and Christianity have on the aspect of “death” euphemism.
