This paper took the aesthetic essence of creating a Chinese classic garden, that is, “following the physical features of a place and being appositely sized”, as the starting point and the exhibition space design method as the research direction to seek for a pattern and state perfectly combining regional cultural identity with modernity, with focus on the study of a Chinese-style design method for interior architectural space which, as a rounded design system, has criteria of its own in respect of functional architecture and aesthetic form. This paper attempted to take the exhibition space as its research direction to explore the interior architectural space from layout and conception to the application of aesthetic forms and techniques and the final completion of a space design. In the section “Introduction”, the topic and the significance of this study were expounded, the importance of “following physical features of a place” as a traditional garden-making aesthetic thought was pointed out, and an aesthetic essence in traditional Chinese culture was unearthed, in the expectation that readers may grasp the variations, tendency and rules of this thought. By study from different perspectives of the technique of “following the physical features of place”, the design method for interior exhibition space and the inherent logic system were explored.Chapter ? “Introduction” highlighted the explication of the background and significance of this study and the definition and interpretation of the term “following the physical features of a place”.Chapter ? explained how to follow, functionally and practically, the physical features of a place and made an in-depth analysis thereof under the guidance of the garden-making thought that “the artfulness lies in adaption to the physical features of a place and the refinement is embodied in apposite shape and size”, which comprised two parts: 1)how to manage the location; and 2) what does “conception first” mean.Chapter ? focused on the explanation of “following the physical features of a place” from the perspective of formal aesthetics. It illustrated the concept of “learning from nature” as highlighted in the formal aesthetics and the inherent law of natural beauty behind the aesthetic thought of “following the physical features of a place”, and made an in-depth study of two intrinsic, organic, and unified elements of the formal aesthetics, i.e. order(compared with disorder) and variation(compared with monotony).Through study of Garden Management, written by Ji Wupi, the garden designer in late Ming Dynasty, Chapter IV analyzed the four dimensions of the concept “following the physical features of a place”,that is, the spatial “remoteness, closeness, up-looking effect, and overlooking effect”, and the time dimension of “pairing landscape to seasonal changes” as proposed by Ji Wupi.On the basis of understanding six senses and six consciousnesses of the Buddhist philosophy and in combination with the analysis of imaginative space, Chapter V discussed the possibility that the artistic conception of a space is generated by six senses and six consciousnesses combined with the concept of “following the physical features of a place”.This paper highlighted the importance of studying traditional aesthetics and understanding Chinese classic garden-making theories, explored a design method for contemporary interior exhibition space by combining case studies, and based on its inherent principles and theories, discussed a whole design system for interior design from conception to the unity of form and spirit and the possession of Chinese aesthetic standards.
