Robert Schuhmann, German composer, music critic in the nineteenth Century, is one of the representatives of western romantic music. In this period, in order to highlight the emotional expression of artistic creation, composers often combined music with other art forms, especially literature works. As a representative composer of this kind of creation, Schuhmann has made a positive and far-reaching influence on the inheritance and development of music in the Romantic Period through his music creation and criticism and set a good example of romantic music.Since ancient times, there is a very close connection between music and literature. Especially in the Romantic Period, in creating music, composers paid more attention to the expression of emotion. The Butterfly is such a piece of piano work combining music with literature, a typical music piece inspirited by literature work. At the same time, Schumann is also the founder of programmatic piano cycle. The use of the general title of Butterfly and subtitle of each period is another feature of the work. The creation of programmatic piano cycle consolidates the important position of Schuhmann in romantic music. In Schuhmann's programmatic music works, the philosophy and rigorousness of classical music works is broken, replaced by the subtle emotional expression and special writing skills, which is Schuhmann's new understanding of romantic music creation. The artistic style of Butterfly has already demonstrated the characteristics of Schuhmann's early creation, and it is selected by many concert performers who play Schuhmann's works.Like a beautiful prose, the Butterfly gives vaster imaginary space to listeners, where the emotion given by music breaks through the limitation of characters. Composers attach importance to the emotional expression of characters, grasp the details and pay attention to the deep feelings of characters and the real reduction of scenes. With twelve simple subtitles, Schuhmann shows these stories and vivid characters to audience. Through in-depth study of the image of music and performance skills, one can have a more profound understanding of the Butterfly. The literariness and programmaticness of the piano cycle, Butterfly reveals its romantic style. The causes include Schumann's rich life experience and profound literary accomplishment. Schumann skillfully combined music creation with literature, which gives unique romantic literary style to the Butterfly. This paper attempts to analyze the creation background, artistic features, the interpretation of musical images and programmatic piano theme of the Butterfly, and explore the emotions in this work combining Schumann's special life experience and dual character. The research on the literariness and programmaticness of the Butterfly helps us deeply understand the perfect fusion of music creation and literature, and have a more comprehensive understanding of Schumann's music. At the same time, it provides a reference for players to achieve more in-depth performance of Schumann's piano works, helps them to analyze the images and metaphor in his works, comprehensively master the beautiful flexible melody, unique rhythm and the delicate and unique harmony, thus helping performance and teaching from various levels and perspectives.
