Interview With The Translation Report On The Most Beautiful Birth History

This present thesis is a translation practice report based on the translation of the book The Most Beautiful Story of Birth,accomplished during my studies of master.The report begins with a brief introduction to the main content of the text to be translated and to the translation process.It then summarizes the elements that are difficult to translate and proposes solutions and strategies that can be applied to general translation tests.The last part is a synthesis and a reflection on the inadequacies of this translation work.I expect from this retrospective work lessons and useful references to better carry out my next activities as a translator.The first part is a brief representation of the text to be translated.In my opinion,the book to be translated traces the history of birth through interviews with a journalist and three French researchers or specialists in the field of birth,the fact of translating it into Chinese has the interest of providing a historical and social view to Chinese readers on birth.Moreover,it is appropriate to classify the text as a non-literary translation,from the point of view of the functionalist schools of translation,the original text is a general information text.I then synthesize the characteristics of the text about the textual organization,the linguistic style and the detailed content.The second part deals with the translation process in the broad sense,containing presentations on the choice of translation strategies,preparatory work on translation and translation in the strict sense,and includes a presentation on post-translational work.The third part analyzes representative examples which show the greatest difficulties encountered during the translation.It also includes reflections on translation strategies.It is composed of three parts.The first part attempts to overcome the difficulties of the grammatical nuances between Chinese and French,including impersonal expressions and passive voices.The second part analyzes the solutions of elements with a cultural meaning broader than its semantic meaning,including proper names,social and cultural events that require explicit compensation to eliminate the sense of cultural isolation of readers.The third part deals with the temptations to unify the linguistic style of the more concise and refined part of the questions,and the part of the answers which retain traces of oral French.I hope this effort could result to a comprehensive and coherent text.The fourth part is a summary of the translation practice.It includes lessons learned from this project and reflections on inadequacies still to be completed,for example,lack of awareness of the translation strategies,lack of knowledge on the standardization of the text to be published,addition of notes and standards to retain a word,an excerpt of the original text in the translated text,etc.Moreover,this work led me to reflect on the role of translator in the choice of the book to translate.I think that the translator must commit,if it is possible to do so,to play a more active role in the choice of the book to translate in order to evaluate the meaning and values of translation projects and to control the quality of imported books.
