A Report On The Application Of The Compensation Theory Into The E-C Translation Of 10 Business News Articles From Washington Post

Due to the differences between different languages and cultures,semantic and cultural losses are inevitable in translation activities.This problem will also be faced when translating business news into Chinese.The loss of content will not only lead to the failure of the equivalence of indicative and associative meanings between the translated text and the original text,but also affect the reading experience of Chinese readers.Therefore,it is necessary to study the compensation strategies in Chinese translation of business news.This report is on the translation of ten business English news articles.The concerned ten texts are taken from Washington Post and cover such topics as business,finance,and stock.These source texts are concise in content and intelligent in language.It is a real challenge for the translator to reproduce the witty and charming language style of the original texts in translating these texts into Chinese.And so,the translator has adopted translation compensation methods and practiced specific compensation techniques in the process of translation.In order to arouse the translators’ attention to the necessity of translation compensation,this report systematically discusses and analyzes the specific application strategies of translation compensation from the semantic and cultural perspectives by summarizing the specific examples taken from the translation of ten news texts from Washington Post(from November 2020 to August 2021)The report analyzes sufficient examples from the translation of the concerned news texts and discusses the translation loss and specific compensation techniques employed in the translation.In order to put theory into practice,the report has studied and summarized the specific compensation methods proposed by distinguished translators and linguists at home and abroad.These compensation methods include vocabulary compensation,grammatical compensation,discourse compensation,contextual amplification and specification.A preliminary conclusion has been drawn that it is highly necessary to adopt proper compensation strategies and methods in the translation of business English news into Chinese.
