Chang'an is the capital in Dynasties of Zhou, Qin, Han, Tang. Many cultural relics resides in Chang'an. Study the tour inspection done by literati in Dynasties of Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing, helps to enrich the cognition of the relics and remains in Chang'an area. It also contributes significantly to the protection of cultural relics in nowadays. This article with 4 chapters presents preliminary research about culture research of Chang'an area in Dynasties of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing.Chapter One, examination of cultural relics by literati and officialdom in Song and Ming Dynasties. Key study targets on the research on cultural relics by Zhang Li from Northern Song Dynasty and Zhao Han from Ming Dynasty. In Northern Song Dynasty, Zhang Li and his friend Chen Mingwei got into South Chang'an from Anshang Door and stayed for 7 days. The routine is from Anshang Door towards south to Qixia Door, passing Qixia Door to the south suburb. They went as far to the Nanwu platform in north foot of Qingling Mountain then coming back from Nanwu platform, through Mingde Door and journey north, passing some lanes and getting into city from Hanguang Door. Seven days trip, they almost visited all the South city cultural relics, including many Buddhist temples and tombs. They also paid special attention to the natural landscape. This trip was fully recorded by Zhang Li in the book "Travelling Notes to south Chang'an". Zhao Han from Ming Dynasty liked inscription on mental and stones. He collected many mental and stone inscriptions from former dynasties from the inspection of Zhongnan Mountain, Jiuzong Mountain and south part of Xi'an. Zhao Han took Zhang Li's book and basically followed the route in the book. He also took notes of things he saw different from Zhang, Li and wrote another "Travelling in the South Chang'an". Zhao Han departures from Yongning Door towards south to Fengyu Pass and Gaoguan Valley based on the north foot of Zhongnan Mountain.Chapter Two, investigation and protection of cultural relics in Chang'an area by Bi Yuan and other official scholars. This paper focuses on the period when Bi Yuan was the governor of Shanxi. He went to field by himself, investigated cultural relics, made measurements to protect the ancient tomb; finishing the forest steles. "Sites in Guanzhong" and "Epigraphy in Guanzhong" are formed with the help of other official scholars which contributes lots to protecting the motherland culture heritage. People speak highly of their behaviors and impacts.Chapter Three, investigations of cultural relics in Chang'an area by foreigners represented by Adachi Kiroku. Adachi Kiroku graduated from Tokyo Teachers College. He was employed by the Qing government to teach in Shanxi Higher School in 1906. He had lived and worked in Xi'an for 4 years. He investigated the cultural relics in Xi'an by using the advanced tools and mathematical knowledge to make use of leisure which is measurement with modern science.Chapter Four, conclusion. Summarize the research activities on cultural relics in the 3 eras. These three inspection activities of Chang'an cultural relics have continuity in time frame and progressive development in content. This reflects the ancients respect history and Chinese culture from the bottom of the heart. The enlightenment of cultural investigation to contemporary is to pay attention to the filed research.In our country, travelling or research activities specialized in cultural relics origins in very early days. Study of such activities is not sufficient. This paper makes some contributions to this research segment. Chang'an area is rich in cultural relics which attracts lot of literati and scholars to come to visit. This article targets on Zhang Li, Zhao Han, Bi Yuan and Adachi Kiroku and introduces the general situations of the investigations and protection of cultural relics and historical sites in Chang'an area.
