Although the Hua-Yi Ideology popular on Korean Peninsula derived from China,it formed its own unique characteristics after integrating into the social realities of the peninsular as clearly shown in the Korean Chinese fictions of foreign invasions and internal fractional strife faced by the Ancient Dynasty. Therefore, this paper intends to discuss and explore the Hua-Yi Concept revealed in these fictions based on relevant historical data and collected works. The main contents are organized as follows. The first chapter briefly introduces some traditional Chinese views of Hua-Yi Concept in order to comb the acceptance of the concept on Korean Peninsula, including the awareness of the distinction between Chinese and barbarians and honoring the king and resisting the barbarians as well as the thought of unification and orthodox. It gives a key description of the Hua-Yi Concept of the native characteristics of Korean Peninsula, such as the distinction between Hua and Yi and the honoring of the Ming dynasty and the demeaning of the Qing dynasty and especially reasons behind such a Hua-Yi Concept after the replacement of the two dynasties, which provide background support for further analysis and discussion. The second chapter describes the war situation of Japanese Disturbance of Imjin. As Ancient Korea was falling apart, the Hua-Yi Concept of the time was reflected on the dynasty's emphasis on toadyism in gratitude to the Ming dynasty for sending troops to help. After the end of the war,Ancient Korea stuck even closer to the national policy of toadyism, which exerted great influences to its attitudes toward the Qing Dynasty in the middle and late Li Dynasty. The third chapter mainly discusses the Hua-Yi Concept during the internal fractional strife faced by the Ancient Dynasty. For instance, soldiers and military officials represented by Lin Qingye put into practice their friendly attitudes toward the Ming dynasty during the war, while civil officials represented by Bing Zichi and the Three Scholars argued against the peace group after Huang Taiji declared the founding of the Qing dynasty. The Ancient Korea showed distinct differences in its attitudes of honoring of the Ming dynasty and demeaning of the Qing dynasty, which displays the strong tendency of Ancient Korea in regarding the Ming Dynasty as the orthodox of Chinese. The fourth chapter focuses on the writing of the Hua Yi Concept in Korean Chinese fictions in the middle and late Li Dynasty, that is,the reminiscence and remembrance of the Ming Dynasty for its great rescuing of Joseon Korea. As these fictions tended to end up with the success or failure of foreign invasions to the capital city, they showed the ideological tendencies of Joseon Korea in honoring the Ming dynasty(or Hua)and demeaning the Qing dynasty(or Yi)and in taking the Ming dynasty as the orthodox. As the new thought of “learning from Yi" emerged with the rise of practical learning in the late 18 thCentury in Korean Peninsula,Joseon Korea made its national awareness stand out.The last chapter draws the conclusion that the Hua Yi Concept of Joseon Korea is particularly evident over the period due to the impacts of both foreign invasions and internal fractional strife it faced. It emphasizes more on the spirit of nationalism out of the righteousness code of conduct advocated during the Spring and Autumn period,in particular the awareness of the distinction between Chinese and barbarians and honoring the king and resisting the barbarians as well as the thought of unification and orthodox.
