Selected for this thesis, the source text is The New Migration-and-Development Pessimism published by Alan Gamlen on Progress in Human Geography in 2014.Through addressing the difficulties during the translating process, the author adopted the functional equivalence theory advanced by Nida, seeking to improve the quality of the translated text. There are culture-specific terms with rich connotations and abundant comparative sentences of various types in the source text.In the case analysis, the author applies two translation strategies, which are corresponding transformation based upon the audience and paraphrasing according to the context,to solve the problems encountered in translating culture-specific terms. Moreover, according to the characteristics of the comparative sentences in the original text, the author elaborates the skills of translating comparative sentences which fall into five categories: equal comparison, unequal comparison, degree comparison, extreme comparison and complex comparison. To conclude, the author makes a summary on how to translate culture-specific terms and comparative sentences, providing reference for the scholars and translators who are interested in them.
