The United States intervened the Vietnam War which was the implementation of the Eisenhower domino theory and an important manifestation of the American-Soviet zero-game in the context of the Cold War.In order to prevent the Indochina region joining the Soviet Union socialist camp,and to maintain the independence of South Vietnam,the United States adopted a series of actions to counter this war,using defoliants was one case of those.Defoliants is an important secret strategic weapon of US military to fight against the South Vietnamese guerrillas and this played an important role in the early stage of action.But the guerrillas soon conducted a more free action strategy after the initial loss,thus the military effect of "defoliation plan" was greatly weakened.However,using defoliants damaged the Vietnam's natural ecological environment.With the media continued to report on the Vietnam War,the use of defoliants of the United States was widely known in the world,which intensified the rising anti-war movement and caused the international community strongly condemned the use of chemical weapons of the United States.After Nixon came to power,actions has been taken to stop the implementation of defoliant plan,this kind of mitigation strategies such as comprehensive ban on biological weapons programs immediately stopped the domestic and international public's decadent opinions both at home and abroad.In order to take the initiative in the control of biological and chemical weapons,the United States actively promoted the international arms control of biological and chemical weapons,and contributed to the global convention— "Biological Weapons Convention" and "Environmental Modification".Therefore,from the perspective of the environmental histories of the Cold War,"Defoliation Plan" has not only become a factor to promote the finish of the Vietnam War,but also detente the situation of the US and Soviet tensions.This paper takes defoliant plan by the United States in the Vietnam War as a research object.Theory with the history of defoliant operations,the dissertation analyzes the origin,implementation and influence of "defoliation plan" from the perspective of the environmental histories of the Cold War.Through the new interpretation of defoliant plan,interaction of the environment elements which was often be overlooked and the Vietnam war situation as well as the Cold War situation will be analysis.
