A Report On The Translation Of The Return Of The Cold War (the Second Section Of Part One)

The translation material is chosen from the second section of Part One of The Return of the Cold War written by J.L.Black and Michael Jones.The book gives a vivid description of the causes and effects of the Ukrainian Crisis in 2013 and the chosen material mainly talks about the changes of the European Union during and after the Ukrainian Crisis.The translation material belongs to non-literary works with a documentary style and objective characteristic.During the translation process,the functional equivalence proposed by Eugene Nida is used as the guidance theory and the translation methods including word conversion,omission and sentence restructuring have been adopted to solve various problems and difficulties.Most of the difficulties are the translation of some terms and long sentences as well as how to get a “natural” equivalent translation.Besides,relevant information searched through varied ways helps to solve the problems caused by the author's lack or misunderstanding of the relevant cultural background.All in all,the author has improved his capability of using the translation theories and skills to settle the translation problems by doing the translation.He also sees his shortcomings and will make great efforts to do more translation practices so as to improve his translation competence.The translation report consists of four parts.Part One is a brief introduction of the translation task including the source of material to be translated,and the introduction of the author and the book.Part Two is the translation procedures comprised of the preparation for translation,text check,and polish and finalization.Part Three is case analysis,the core of the translation report,mainly analyzing the translation process and skills from the aspects of lexical terms,syntax,discourse and culture.At the end of the report,the author summarizes the translation report,mostly expressing his own understanding of the translation.
