What is the function of art in today society? What it's its status today in relation to the other fields of knowledge? The aim of this thesis is to answer those questions through the rereading of Modern Art under the paradigm of its relationship with science. The fourth dimension and Non-Euclidean geometries will constitute in this thesis the common field to analyse the interconnected collaboration between art and science in the understanding of complex reality.Particular attention is given to the work of Marcel Duchamp, firstly as a great example of the involvement of modern art in the science practise, and secondly for its importance in the evolution of Modernist art from the specificity of the medium to a generic art.The thesis is dived in three main chapters that correspond to the three main phases of evolution of modern art:the initial shift from the social function of art to the specificity of the medium, the definition of "art at large" through the work of Duchamp, and finally to conceptualisation of art as "art idea" in the last part of the XX century. Finally,I will discuss the philosophical implication of the increasing focus toward art's own nature at the end of the XX century. The writings of Joseph Kosuth,Jean Baudrillard,Theodor Adorno,as well as the duchampian legacy, are referenced to answer the original question of art's function in contemporary society.
