For foreign language learners,one of the most important points lies in mastering and understanding the phenomenon of polysemy in the process of learning.It is common to see polysemy verbs in Japanese.If learners want to use polysemy verbs in Japanese flexibly,they must master the meaning of polysemy verbs in Japanese and understand how to use it comprehensively.Cognitive linguistics has been used in studying polysemy widely since it flourished in the 1980s.Polysemy is one of the most important subjects in cognitive linguistics.Cognitive ability and cognitive activities which forms from the process of the contacts between people and objective things reflect the formation and extension of semantics.By applying cognitive principles,including prototype theory,metaphor,metonymy and image schema,we can explore the essence of semantics,which can analyze the formation of polysemy and construct the semantic relations more easily.Based on the study of Japanese verb "tatu",we explore the prototype meaning of it by applying the theory of cognitive linguistics.We also analyze the correlations among meanings and further construct the semantic frame of "tatu,".On the basis of that,we investigate the semantic features of "tati?" and "?tatu" in compound's structure like that "verb + verb".Then we analyze the influence that the semantic meaning of the verb itself has on whole meaning of compound verbs after constructing the compound verb "tatu".Above all,we hope to offer references for Japanese learners in the study of Japanese polysemy verbs in the future.
