Compound verb in Japanese simply belongs to the subcategory of compound word. Compound verb is a unit formed by verbs, and each verb has lost its original meaning and independence so as to form a linguistic unit with new grammatical rules and meaning. Compound verb explored in the present paper refers to verbs compounded by two verbs, which is "verb + verb".The present paper first analyzes compound word, and then explores compound verb in detail from the perspective of essential, definition, features and categories of it. This paper focuses on examining meaning and usage of three compound verbs' consequent with meaning of "beginning actions". Still the writer adopts the view of cognitive linguistics to analyze the relationship between compound word with meaning of "beginning action" and meaning and usage of three compound verbs' consequent. Meaning and usage of compound word with meaning of "beginning action" are also analyzed independently. Finally meaning and usage of three words are analyzed and distinguished from the angle of cognitive linguistics. When each compound verb is form by consequents, some compound verbs have taken the original meaning of the pure verb, while some others taken transformed meaning. The original meaning of a pure verb changes as the newly formed compound verb, as well as the range of meaning changes or changes to abstract and metaphorical meaning. All this can be proved reasonably from the theory of cognitive linguistics. This paper tries to present a number of examples to examine meaning and usage of pure verb, compound verb's consequent and compound verb with the meaning of "beginning action". It is expected to take some positive effect on Japanese learning and compound verb research.
