People often express themselves by taking selfies. On one hand, the artists try to find their sense of identity and self-awareness from themselves;on the other hand, the fact of photography techniques being popularized makes itself the best way for normal people to appreciate and show themselves."Looking at the world" has also become the confirmation of their sense of presence.Taking selfies,as a way of self-expression for both artists and normal people, creates different personalities in every photo. It is not only a discussion about the vision, body, environment and identity, but also a cultural behavior about people’s self-reflection.When we talk about taking selfies under the circumstance of today’s society, its "universality","spontaneousness" and "phenomenon" become noticeable. It is influenced by objective factors such as the Commodity Era,the popularization of taking photos, and the development of social networks;and subjective factors like human’s instincts and psychological needs. In the internet world where people combine the influence of relationship building-ups,interactions,and fast information deliveries as the core of their values, the style of taking selfies has been logically transforming from the simple repetitions of objective images,to some advanced subjective recreations, then finally to the pure imaginations.Taking selfies exposes people themselves to public, and dramatizes their normal life.It happens both in people real life and the life that comes from their performative imaginations, melting and re-sculpting people’s sense of identity again and again. With reference to Jacques Lacan’s Mirror phase,Jung’s personality theory,Zajonc’s Mere exposure effect, and Freud’s Pansexualism, this essay tries to discuss and solve the confusions about the way of self-expressing,the meaning and value of one individual’s existence, and the uncertainty of the identity caused by taking selfies.
