Hushanji is a serial novel in late Qing Dynasty which consists of 69 chapters.This book tells us a story about the king of the Hu Mountain whose name is Yan Shaoqing. He is a young man comes from a place outside of Hu Mountain, becomes the son-in-law and establishes the Hu Mountain Country under the help and support of his wives. This novel uses a closed and undeveloped area as the background which located in the west of Yunnan in the ancient times. It is embodies the author's Confucian political aspir-ations and expresses the author's nostalgia for the tradition.The main text divides into four chapters.The first chapter is about the review of the author and the edition. The author Cai Zhaohua likes to keep low profile, so we only can get more information about his life by reading Local Chronicles and his poems. According to the specific content of his poems, we can have a rough speculation about his social identity and personal interests. At the same time, we have a clearer picture about the edition by systematically reviewing the hand-down editions.The second chapter analyzes the text value of the novel. On one hand, this novel regards "strong women and weak men" as the typical characteristics of the characters based on the traditional patriarchal society and highlights the gender reverse of the society. On the other hand, it is embodies the author's Confucian political aspirations by measuring the strength of the civil officials and the military officers as well as the establishment of the "Hu Mountain Country".The third chapter discusses the military culture and the chieftain culture at that time. This novel well combines the military strategies "Art of War" and "Thirty -Six Stratagems" by using wars as the carrier and selects the villages under the control of the chieftain of Yunnan as the object. The fictional form presents unique folk customs and the management mode of the Hu Mountain emperor.The fourth chapter analyzes the artistic features of narration and rhetoric methods. With the effect of historical narrative method,this novel uses lots of flashback and supplemented method in narration. In addition, it is also shows out the hearty pursuit of the author; This novel also exhibits the unique artistic value by naming the characters, writing novels on violence and showing the symbolic meaning in rhetoric.
