This paper takes the phonetics of Shizhen dialect as the main research object.It attempts to offer the objective and synthetical description of Shizhen phonetics and sum up the fundamental form of its development via the traditional description and comparison.This paper is divided into five chapters:Preface:It introduces the history, location, population, the language, and illustrates the phonetics symbols of Stone town dialect and so on.Chapter1:The phonetic system of Shizhen dialect. It details the phonetic system of Shizhen dialect,including its consonants,vowels,tones and their compositional rules.Chapter2:A collection of the old homophones in Shizhen dialect.Chapter3:The phonetic comparison between Shizhen dialect and Medieval pronunciation. It details the differences to find out the relationship. According to the finals, Middle Ages initials are divided into two or three groups,such as Ni,Jing,Zhi,Zhang; Characters of Xian Perturbation, Xie Perturbation and Shan Perturbation still exist differences,many characters of Geng Perturbation present literary reading and colloquial reading,rhyme tail [m] has been absorbed into[n] and[?];in accordance with Qingzhuo of the initials, Yinping and Qusheng can be differentiated into Yin and Yang, Ru-rhymes of IVA has lost, which only keeping the tone.Chapter4:The phonetic comparison between Shizhen dialect and Mandarin.It aims to discribe the development of Shizhen dialect.Syllables' stop coda of IVA has lost,meloy value of Yinping,Yangping and Shangsheng are same or similar between Shizhen dialect and Mandarin,IVA and IVB has a trend of merging.All kinds of phenomena suggest that Shizhen is closing to Mandarin.Chapter5:This chapter introduces the tone sandhi, retroflex suffixation, suffix zi of Shizhen dialect.It analyzes tone sandhi rules of Shizhen dialect and the tail of the phonetic variants. Overall, the bi-syllabic sandhi rules of Shizhen dialect is neat and simple, modulation of the former syllable is relatively complex,the latter changes only linked with entering tone; Influenced by the characteristics of the former syllable,Suffix zi in Shizhen dialect has three phonetic forms,namely [(?)], [l?] and [n?].
