Giuseppe Verdi created a total of twenty-eight operas throughout his life,of which twenty-six are tragedies."Falstaff" is Verdi's last opera which he created at an advanced age of 80,and it is the only successful comic one among his operas."Falstaff" was adapted from parts of Shakespeare's "Windsor Merry" and "Henry IV",and it created Falstaff,a tragedy character with dramatic color,Verdi's comedy style sets off the definition of "human nature" in the opera.This paper mainly summarizes the value of this opera by focusing on three parts.First,it gives a preliminary understanding of Verdi's last opera and its sytle and characteristic,by analyzing the background of "Falstaff".Second,it gives a further understanding on the music and overal structure of this operak which also paves the way for the analysis of harmony and drama structure.Finally,it gives an explaination of the tone,the chord structure,the harmony and the way it contributes to create images running through the whole drama,so as to give a conclusion of the characteristics of this opera and the expression of "human nature" in harmony.
