Reading is an important method of acquiring knowledge. Most people have the habit of reading something while listening to music. However, when reading Chinese or English eassays, different background music will have different effects on the reading process. It is worth studying that how to reduce the interference of background music to reading activities and look for more efficient reading to get better reading testing results.In this study, two experiments were conducted by using the eye tracking technique and subjects were 30 college students selected separately from Nanjing Normal University and Hohai University. Both experiments were repeated measures factorial design. There were two independent variables, each had 2 levels: the language of music (Chinese, English) and the rhythm of music (fast-tempo,slow-tempo). Besides, the condition of reading eassays without any music was considered as the baseline level in this study. This study is aimed at showing the influence on Chinese-English texts while listening to background musics or without background music.The results of this study show that the effect on eye movement indexs of the Chinese-English reading process is least without background music , but the impact is very significant under the condition of different music. Besides, the correct rate has nothing with the background music. In short, this study draws the following conclusions:(1) Experiment 1: Background music affects the reading process of the Chinese text. When reading Chinese eassays, compared with English songs, Chinese songs shows more influences during the reading process; listening to fast-tempo songs shows more impact than slow-tempo songs. In addition, reading eassays without music has the least influence on the reading process of eye movement. However, the correct rate has nothing with the background music.(2) Experiment 2: Background music will affect the reading process of the English text. Chinese songs shows more influences during the English reading process; fast-tempo Chinese songs shows more impact than slow-tempo Chinese songs,but slow-tempo English songs shows more impact than fast-tempo English songs. In addition, reading eassays without music has the least influence on the reading process. Similarly, the correct rate has nothing with the background music.
