An Eye Movement Study On The Influence Of Different Types Of Background Music On College Students’ Reading Efficiency

As music devices become more and more portable and readily available,it has become a very common phenomenon for college students to listen to music during their studies.However,until now,the effect of background music on learning has remained an open question,and conclusive findings have not been reached in the literature.In existing studies,researchers have not only found the "Mozart effect," or the effect of music on reasoning,but also found that background music interferes with learning in certain situations.Does background music affect the task differently under different conditions? Based on this thinking,this study explored the influence of different music types and task processing levels on reading and the characteristics of eye movement.This research includes two 2 x 2 subjects in the experiment,60 of the east China normal university college students as subjects,the Chinese paper for the purpose of the experiment material,to explore the different background music’s influence on the reading process: under the condition of experiment 1 to 2(music high arousal,low arousal)x 2(reading task: to summarize the key words,reading comprehension),experiment 2 to 2(normal music,music modulation)x 2(reading task: to summarize the key words,reading comprehension).In the course of the experiment,Tobii Pro TX300 eye tracker was used to collect the eye movement of the subjects in the process of reading,and the reading time and answer correct rate were counted.Subjective questionnaires were used to investigate their metacognition and emotional state in the background music.The results show that the influence of background music on learning is mediated by both music type and task type,and the interaction between them is significant.The higher the arousal degree of music is,the more irregular the melody is,the worse the reading performance is,the lower the reading efficiency is,and the more difficult the reading task is,the greater the degree that the reading process is disturbed by music.The experimental results are consistent with the resource occupancy hypothesis.Eye movement,fixation frequency,average fixation time and other indicators can effectively and sensitively reflect the reading efficiency and psychological load of individual reading.Study found that when the reading task is simple,the subjects under high music arousal report high psychological pressure,but does not show a poor reading levels and a slower reading speed,suggesting that our music type interactions with reading task may be associated with individual cognitive processing and the regulating,perhaps in the future in the background music on the impact of cognitive tasks,metacognition is worthy of the researchers focus on the mining point of view.
