At 2010 Cannes Film Festival,Apichatpong Weerasethakul – director of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives became the first Thai film director to win the Palme d’Or prize.As an independent film director,his works are full of extraordinary features with an outstanding style.his movies were based on Thai culture,absorbing and inheriting Thai Buddhists spirits,at the same time,showing social life of Thailand with deeply thinking.On the other hand,he insists on exploring his individualized style,in terms of film language and narrative characteristic.His movies mainly focus on the themes of disease,dream and desire,featuring with binary opposition and silent-style audio-visual language.Owing to the humanistic approach and unique artistic style,his movies enrich Thai movie’s diversity and arouse attention of Thai movie industry.Based on understanding the film itself,this paper will analyze narrative methods and art of Apichatpong Weerasethakul ’s film creation by interpreting scripts.Besides,summarizing the characteristics of his movies will contribute to clarifying the creation concepts of Apichatpong.In the first chapter,this paper will reveal the impact of traditional Thai culture on the value orientation of Apichatpong Weerasethakul ’s films,by analyzing the life experience of Apichatpong,Thai political environment and Buddhists cultural features.In the second chapter,explaining and understanding about the film themes will be conducted.Apichatpong interpret Thai social life from his own perspective,he also diagnoses the physical and psychological diseases for this era from some aspects,like time and space.Exploring the meaning of life from diseases and the cycle of life and capturing people’s desire from dream and lust are his main theming concepts.The third chapter will demonstrate narrative features about Apichatpong’s movies.The binary opposition will be found in film narrativestructure,narrative subject,narrative environment,narrative plot and other aspects,which will be helpful to understand his narrative features.The forth chapter will clarify the movie narrative language,which mainly focus on audio-visual language.In order to arouse in-depth thinking about life and show aesthetic exploration of Apichatpong,this part will dicuss the use of the camera,vocal expression and color slection in detail.By facilitating a mysterious style with his unique narrative mode,Apichatpong perfectly integrated his thoughts about human and life into his works.From his outstanding films,it is easy to understand his interests on aesthetics,recognition level and social significance.
