According to cognitive linguistic theory,conceptual metaphor is a way of thinking about things and a universal linguistic phenomenon.In the process of tanslating Calculus?(Chapter1),it is discoved that there are a lot of cases of personification metaphor — a type of conceptual metaphor in the source text where the most common cases are verbs though there are still few cases of adjectives and nouns.The conceptual metaphors in English and Chinese are not equivalent and hence it is not possible to translate all of them literally with their metaphorical connotations remained.Through comparing the English and Chinese textbooks of mathematics,it is concluded that although conceptual metaphor is popular in both languages there are more cases in English texts than those in Chinese ones.Considering the concentional expressions in Chinese mathematical texts,the main translation stragies employed in this translation practice are the literal method,keeping the original metaphor,and the adaptive method,changing the original metaphor.To choose an appropriate translation strategy,it is suggested to consider the conceptual methor difference in English and Chinese,conventional methematical term expressions in Chinese,and other related principles.It attempts to provide examples for the methematics textbook translation in terms of conceptual metaphor translation,meanwhile,it also may work as a reference for the study of scientific and technical text translation.
