This is a study of metaphor translation between English and Chinese carried outwithin the framework of cognitive linguistics' conceptual metaphors. It first makes acomparative study of Chinese and English conceptual metaphors, and points out thatthere are same conceptual metaphors, absent conceptual metaphors and conceptualmetaphors with different degrees of typicality between English and Chinese. Thesimilarity provides convenience and easiness for metaphor translation, while thedifference makes it difficult to translate. The translating of metaphor is controlled andorganized by conceptual metaphors. In different situations, the cognitive processesundergoing in translator's mind are different. According to the cognitive processes, threetranslation methods are proposed: metaphorical expressions projected by sameconceptual metaphors, metaphorical expressions projected by similar conceptualmetaphors, and non-metaphorical expressions. Metaphorical expressions projected bysame conceptual metaphors can project cognition identical to that of the source text, thusachieve maximal functional equivalence;while expressions translated by the other twomethods can not project the same cognition, and part of the meaning will be deviated orlost. The aim of translation should be achieving maximal equivalence, so translatorsshould try their best to translate to metaphorical expressions projected by sameconceptual metaphors.
