Since the classical era, freedom has been one of the core values pursued by politics.Liberalism, which pursues freedom as its primary value, has enjoyed a prominent position in Western politics for a long time in modern times. For four centuries, the rising liberalism in the West has repeatedly inspired the political campaigns in Europe, the United States and the countries that are affected by the West.It has dramatically changed the world's political landscape.Liberalism was once in trouble in the 20 th century. However, with the end of the Cold War in the late 20 th century and the resurgence of conservative liberalism in western countries, liberalism regained popularity in foreign political science research. With the continuous development of reform and opening up and political studies in China, the understanding of Western politics has deepened.Liberalism is also receiving more and more attention in China. At the juncture of the great development of China in the21 st century, how to view liberalism rationally is an important topic in the study of Chinese political science. In the 20 th century when liberalism was in trouble, there appeared many question of criticism and criticism on liberalism. At the end of the century when liberalism was revitalized, there emerged the end of myth of liberalism represented by the end of history.Although the economic crisis and terrorism posed new challenges to liberalism, another conservative view of "fundamentalism" emerged in the new century and pointed out that in the face of current problems, the emphasis should be on maintaining the precious tradition of the liberal golden age.In response to this thesis, tracing back the history and studying the golden age of liberalism,it has the realistic significance of the present. The study of modern British liberalism is the most typical representative.Because Britain was regarded as the birthplace of modern liberalism, the British Empire was even regarded as the mythical representative of the road to liberalism toward prosperity. In the heyday of Victoria, the empire is an unquestionable global hegemony.According to some simple logics,it is not hard to come to the conclusion that liberalism has led Britain to prosper and prosper. However,it was at this time that the British Empire exposed many complicated issues that led to the collapse of the British Empire. One of the most typical cases is the Great Famine and Independence in Ireland. The Great Famine and Independence in Ireland are the plight of utilitarianism behind British liberalism: the utilitarian society of economic man rational, there is only the freedom to seek benefits and not give up benefits. This predicament is the inevitable result of its solidified vested interests: abandoning the revolutionary ideal of justice and changing to the interest of realism.Under this predicament,British liberalism had to embark on the path of imperialism's external transfer of costs. After the end of this road, they can only fall into the trap of contracting welfarism internally.Today, the recovery and anti-globalization of the right-wing forces testify to the poverty of liberal mythology. Therefore, there is neither the possibility of returning to the golden age nor the need of upholding the precious tradition. The pursuit of political truth is bound to get rid of the superstition of political theology, which is also the inevitable attitude of Chinese political science to the study of western classical theories. Therefore, the understanding of modern British liberalism must be based on criticism and reflection.
