After World War II,a democratic system was initially established in accordance with the principles of modern western democracy in Japan during the occupation of the United States. After decades of development,Japan has been recognized as a democratic country. However, according to some political scholars,Japan's democracy has some controversy. The focus of the controversy lies in the long-term single party rule of the Liberal Democratic Party.Since 1955,the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party has won nearly every election victory, and thus has been alone in power. Its successive presidents have also been in the rank of prime minister.Although the Liberal Democratic Party is now in power with other political parties,it still holds a dominant or central position in the cabinet. This paper uses the relevant reforms of the Japanese political party system in the 1990 s as an entry point, and analyzes the characteristics of the party politics in Japan under the “1955-system”,the problems that exist, and the content and effectiveness of the reforms in response to these issues in the 1990 s.As a result,we can have a deeper understanding of the political development of political parties in transition countries. The study of this article mainly has two meanings: The first is the significance of self-learning.Deepening my understandings by using the basic theories to explain Japan's political party phenomenon;second,it has certain theoretical and practical significance.Taking Japan as a case study of transitional countries,by studying the particularity of its "one-party dominance" party politics and summing up the political party's development experience in the transitional countries,it also has implications for the party's political development in other transitional countries.
