As the first step of classroom teaching, lead-in is considered as one of the most crucial parts of classroom activities. As the beginning of one lesson, lead-in plays a great role in creating an active learning environment as well as ensuring the whole lesson goes smoothly. A good and effective lead-in can stimulate students’ interest and enthusiasm for English learning,help them link up the old and the new knowledge and thus consolidate their learning and also improve learning efficiency. Nevertheless, now the studies about lead-in are insufficient in China, most of which are just summing up the experience of teaching; in the process of classroom teaching, lead-in is not much valued. Certain English teachers do not pay enough attention to lead-in during their teaching or do not utilize lead-in effectively.On the basis of the Input and Output Hypotheses, this thesis tries to discover the main ways of lead-in and the real situation in junior middle schools through observation and questionnaire. In addition, it also probes into the suitable ways to make the lead-in part more effective in order to make the students well-prepared for English learning and ensure that the lessons can go smoothly and effectively.The research results reveal that most English teachers in junior middle schools have realized the significance of lead-in. However, there are some problems when they put lead-in theories into practice, such as lacking of theories concerned on lead-in. Besides the design of lead-in is monotonous and boring, which is short of diversity and enjoyment. Based on research results, the author gets some enlightenment: firstly, the teachers should put more emphasis on lead-in and lead-in should be full of flexibility and diversity; secondly, studies of the theories and researches on lead-in should be carried out in a deep-going way.With the help of this research the author hopes that the teachers can get an overall understangding of lead-in, deeply realize the importance of lead-in and find the weakness of their teaching; and the author hopes this research can offer some suggestions for optimizing lead-in and improving teaching efficiency in English teaching so as to boost the development of the elementary education.
