Ion reaction is an important part of chemistry knowledge in senior high school. When making a lesson plan, teachers need to be aware of students' prior knowledge.Senior high school students have mastered the knowledge of the conductivity of acid, alkali, and salt solution in their junior high school study, but do not understand the nature of conductivity. Therefore,it requires teachers to teach on the basis of threefold representation(macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic),so that students can grasp the essence of chemical reactions from the micro perspective and learn to write equations of ion reactions. This paper is to discuss the application of threefold representation in Ion reaction teaching. This paper firstly outlines the research background of threefold representation and its significance in the ion reaction teaching. Then the author describes the importance of studying ion reactions and the importance of threefold representation in teaching ion reactions. This paper also compares and summarizes the research on the following areas, the meaning of ion reactions, the conditions of ion reactions, ion reactions equations, and the lesson plan of ion reactions Based on the research, the author ascertained the center of this paper which is to look into the practical application of threefold representation. The author analyzed ion reaction section in the curriculum standards and textbook, examined the lesson objectives and potential teaching difficulties, and also conducted survey to look into students' prior knowledge. Then the author incorporated threefold representation into the ion reaction lesson plan and conducted the lesson in the author's placement school. The author drew the conclusions according to extensive resources, including the author's mentor, other pre-service teachers, student feedback and students' answers to the relevant questions. There are three conclusions in total. The first one is that threefold representation theory is applicable in ion reactions teaching. The second conclusion is that threefold representation theory is consistent with students' cognitive development. The last conclusion is that threefold representation theory is beneficial to develop students' micro concepts.Based on the conclusions, the author proposed three teaching suggestions. The first suggestion is to build on students' prior knowledge. The second one is to choose appropriate teaching strategies with the consideration of threefold representation theory. The last suggestion is to make use of the mode of group study and promote students' understanding of concepts.
