John Dewey (1859-1952) is a great pragmatist philosopher and educator in American, he has been hailed as "the symbol of the American spirit". He is also famous all over the world, especially for China in the period of the May 4th movement, he made a great contribution to the education of our country at that time and in the later period. Play theory is a part of Dewey's educational thoughts, this paper is deeply and systematically explore and research on Dewey's thought of play.Dewey's thought of play has important theoretical and practical significance for our country's present education conditions that is paying more and more attention to the role of play in preschool education.By using the literature method and the logic analysis method, this paper comprehensively analyzes the basis of Dewey's thought of play, the theoretical basis and the educational practice, then systematically sorts out the main contents of Dewey's thought of play, and finally generalizes the main features of Dewey's thought of play and thus initiated reflection and enlightenment on our country's preschool education theory and practice.This paper is divided into four parts to illustrate Dewey's thought of play:The introduction part mainly introduces the reason of choosing this topic, the research significance, the research purpose, the related research review and the research method and so on;The first part of the text:Based on the brief introduction of Dewey's life, this part discusses the historical background and philosophical foundation of Dewey's thought of play,and analyzes the psychology basis and the background of pedagogy and the education practice;The second part of the text:In this part, Dewey's thought of play is deeply and systematically explored and studied, and its connotation is mainly interpreted as four parts: the connotation of active occupation, the interpretation of Dewey's thought of play, Dewey's acceptance and criticism of Froebel and Montessori's thought of play and work. Dewey's thought of play includes.the purpose of play is "children's sufficient growth", the play has both positive and negative values, play and work is a continuous whole, dramatic play has important value and the role of teachers of the play.The third part of the text:This part analyzes the main features of Dewey's thought of play, including that he tends to connect play with an open social and cultural context, but not limited to the discussion of psychology aspects; he tends to connect play with work and occupation, but he distinguishes between work and drudgery; he pay more attention to the social significance of play, but not limited to the cognitive value. And on this basis, this part presents the reflection and enlightenment on our country's preschool education theory and practice of Dewey's thought of play from thi'ee aspects:Reflection on the play status in Chinese traditional culture; The construction of the relationship between play.learning and curriculum; Rational treatment of play and playing the value of play to build a better social life.
