Phonetics is an important part of the linguistic knowledge as well as a foundation of the entire linguistic system.English phonetic teaching influences many linguistic competences such as the lexical mastery,listening comprehension and oral communication.As is pointed out in the English Curriculum Standard of compulsory education(2011 version),phonetic teaching is of great significance of the linguistic teaching.The natural and standard voice and tone will lay a good foundation for the efficient oral communication.Meanwhile,it clearly claims the secondary goal of English phonetics for primary school graduates,and corresponding knowledge skills in pronunciation,stress,liaison,tone,rhythm,etc.Phonetic teaching for the high-grade in primary school is a teaching activity in which according to the curriculum standards and students' real situation,teachers design proper teaching goals,select and manage the phonetic teaching content and apply various phonetic teaching methods,so as to make students understand the pronunciation and spelling rules of letter and letter combination in words,experience the phonetic phenomena like sentential stress,liaison,rhythm and tone,improve students' abilities of spelling and memorizing words,and develop their oral communication abilities.However,at present.English phonetic teaching for the high-grade in primary school is not going well.This research adopts such research methods as document analysis,investigation and observation,and explores relevant problems in English phonetic teaching for the high-grade in primary school.The respondents are mainly the students and teachers from three primary schools in Y city of Jiangsu province.The investigation mainly involves the status and importance of phonetic teaching for the high-grade in primary school,phonetic teaching goal,phonetic teaching content,phonetic teaching method and phonetic teaching evaluation.After this investigation,it is found that the main problems exist in English phonetic teaching for the high-grade in primary school now are:lack of recognition of phonetic teaching status and importance,inaccurate positioning of the phonetic teaching goal,insufficient phonetic teaching content,restriction to the textbook,single phonetic teaching method,weak interactivity,and single phonetic teaching evaluation content and method.These problems are mainly caused by the influence of exam-oriented education and traditional teaching idea,incomplete curriculum arrangement,shortage of active research motivation of teacher and lack of scientific evaluation mechanism.For these problems,the following countermeasures can be adopted:schools should assure the independent status of phonetic teaching and strengthen their organization and management;teachers should attach great importance to the ability and emotion objectives in phonetics,enrich the phonetic teaching content,pay attention to the interactivity of teaching method,improve students' involvement and achieve diversification of subject and method of teaching evaluation.
