Cluster Cycle And Total Factor Productivity Of Manufacturing Industry

For more than 30 years of reform and opening-up,depending on the unique geographical advantages,the pearl river delta region forms a large amounts of distinctive industrial clusters.Cluster economy is an important factor to promote the development of local economy,and formed by a large number of low-cost inputs.Cluster economy is the source of driving local economic development,providing a strong competitiveness for the local economy.In recent years,rising labor costs,environmental pollution problems etc.,bring some problems to the industry clusters,the original advantage industry beginning to degenerate,losing competition vitality with signs of a recession.Therefore,how to make the pearl river delta region have longer and more lasting competitiveness cluster economy,is an important path to ensure the sustainable development of regional economy.At present,there are many qualitative research and quantitative research on the industrial cluster,and the literature on industrial clusters from the perspective of cluster cycle is mostly limited to qualitative research.However,the research on the industrial cluster's literature from the perspective of cluster cycle is mostly limited to qualitative research,and there are few literatures about quantitative analysis.According to the cluster life cycle theory,we can understand the cluster cycle show different characteristics in different stages,Here we use Silverman and McGahan approach,the cluster cycle is divided into emerging clusters,mature clusters and recession clusters.Emerging clusters,mature clusters and recession cluster have different influence on the development of local economy.Accordingly,this sparks author thinking of the following questions:(1)what impact different stages of the cluster cycle have on the local economy,and what is the impact difference about different stages of cluster cycle have on the local total factor productivity?(2)what impact different stages of the cluster cycle have on its total factor productivity,and how to take advantage of the cluster economy to the best?In order to explore the above questions,this article carries on relevant argumentation and qualitative research respectively on the theoretical and empirical aspect.In the theoretical part,this paper introduces the related literature on the cluster and total factor productivity research,enumerates the classical location theory represented by Weber,Hoover etc.,the new economic geography theory represented by Krugman,cane etc.,and Michael porter diamond model;Secondly,introduce the recent research on cluster cycle theory from perspective of both at home and abroad;Finally,analyzes the cluster cycle characteristics at each stage,and effect mechanism of different stages of the cycle of cluster on total factor productivity.In the empirical part,firstly,this article summarizes the existing research on the cluster and total factor productivity from the perspectives of both at home and abroad,and then carries on the empirical analysis using the data from the pearl river delta,on the basis of the unbalanced panel data of manufacturing industry in Guangzhou,Shenzhen,Dongguan,Zhuhai,Zhao Qing,Foshan six city from 1993 to 2012.First of all,by introducing the concept of cluster cycle and using location entropy measure method,the cluster is divided into emerging clusters,mature cluster,recessive cluster,and measures agglomeration level of every stage of the cluster cycle;Secondly,using Solow residual method and input and output data of each city manufacturing industries to measure the total factor productivity of each industry,we find that the total factor productivity of emerging cluster level is higher than that of mature clusters,total factor productivity level of mature clusters is higher than that of the recessive cluster;lastly,using the multi-layer linear analysis method,taking the education level,the urban scale,the level of wages,foreign direct investment and other factors that influence the total factor productivity into account,this paper carries on measurement analyses on the relationship between emerging cluster,mature cluster,recessive cluster and total factor productivity.At the same time,taking into account the impact of the cluster on total factor productivity may be lagging behind,this paper also made a corresponding lag time regression results.Through the empirical analysis,we reach the following conclusions:(1)In the pearl river delta,correlation relationship between emerging cluster and the local total factor productivity is significant negative,correlation relationship between mature cluster,recessive cluster and the local total factor productivity is a significant positive.(2)Emerging cluster,mature cluster has no significant effect on total factor productivity of cluster itself,recessive cluster has significant negative effect on total factor productivity of cluster itself.(3)Among the control variables,education level and the city productivity value can both promote the level of total factor productivity of manufacturing industry,but the significance is instability.Then,on the basis of empirical research,this paper analyzes and summarizes the existing problems about the development of cluster economy in the Pearl River delta,and explores the causes.Finally,the article provides the related countermeasure and the suggestion for sustainable development of cluster economy in the Pearl River delta.
