In recent years,China's online gaming industry carried by strong momentum has been sky rocketing in product quantity,customer size and direct sales,impacting directly and significantly China's economy,culture,and education.The expressiveness and influence of an online game product highly depends on its content orientation.In a time of the booming online game industry,it is of particular importance to look-review and examine content orientation-before we leap.To this end,the thesis analyzes the development and the content of the online game industry in order to answer the following questions:(1)What stages of development has China's online game industry been through?What are the reasons for its rapid development?(2)Currently,what are the contents of massively multiplayer online games(MMOG)?What is the orientation of Chinese online games.(3)Reflecting on the current situation and orientation of the online games in China,what roles should online gaming play?This thesis first overviews from a text analysis perspective the history and current status of China's online gaming in terms of customer size,competitive environment,and profit model.It also investigates the reasons for the rapid growth of China's online game industry considering demographics,technologies,and policies.Next,statistics are provided on the contents of 386 games produced by Tencent Games,Netease Games,and 37 Games.Orientations of content and forms of presentation are summarized from text analysis of the scenarios(themes,backgrounds,and characters)and mechanics(graphical perspective,quest types,and social interaction)of the top 3 "Ten Most Popular Online games " and the top 3 "China Best-selling IOS Games" in 2006.Heeding the current development and content orientation of China's online game,the thesis reconsiders online game's role in recreation,education,and culture.The study finds that China's online game industry,through the preparatory,emerging,and growing stages,has entered a period of all-around progress and comprehensive expansion owing to consistency in demographic dividend,popularity of mobile devices,and encouragement from government policies.However,the accelerated growth of this industry is dominated by an entertaining tendency in gaming scenario and mechanics.In hindsight,educational and cultural values should be added to the recreational role of online games to fulfil their potential;joint efforts between the government and enterprises are required for improvements in online game content.
