The Comparative Study Of The Nanjing And Shanghai's Hong Band Tailors Western-style Suit Industry During The Period Of The Republic Of China

This paper takes the Nanjing and Shanghai's Hong Band Tailors western-style suit industry during the period of the Republic of China as the research object,and analyses the characteristics of the suit industry of both city during their development based on the related theories of sociology and Economics.The issues will be discussed Mainly from the following three aspects:First,the comparison of the course of the development,by the way of dividing the development process into three stages: the early,mid and late stage.At the early stage,the founders of the Hong Band suit industry are both traditional tailors in Shanghai and Nanjing.At the mid stage,the Hong Band Tailors western-style industry developed very fast in both city because of the increase of the population and the opening social environment.At the late stage,the Hong Band western-style suit industry were both affected badly by the Anti-Japanese War,and recovered soon after the war.Second,the analysis of the products,the paper analyses five kinds of products of the Hong Band suit industry of Shanghai and Nanjing.Suit occupy the main position in the business activities of the two places,but the innovation of the suit style of Shanghai is superior to Nanjing,because of the more open social environment and early in time.Chinese tunic suits are also the main products of the two places,but the sales ratio of Nanjing is higher than that of Shanghai,because Nanjing is the political center and occupies a larger number of servant team.The third kind of product is the uniform,and the sales ratio of uniform of Nanjing is higher,because Nanjing is the capital city and has more soldiers.The fourth kind of product is western style dresses and coats,both city have stable consumer groups,so they are also the main product of the Hong Band suit shops.Third,the comparison of the management model of Hong Band Tailors suit industry of the two places.We start the study with four aspects: naming,locating,marketing and main business.The suit industry of the two city all use the traditional shop names in the early stage,and use new names in the later stage.The Shanghai's shop names are new in adding English labeling and the use of English translation of names,and the names of Nanjing's shop names are new in using the varied new Chinese words.As for the locating issue,two city's Hong Band Tailors suit shops are all opened in downtown area.The comparison of the marketing strategy was made through the word-of-mouth marketing,the advertising and the lean marketing.As for the business,the suit industry of the both city has the same businesses and their own focus.Last,the comparison of the administrative agency of Shanghai and Nanjing.The paper compared the agency throughout the administration system and the importance of the agency.The administrative agencies of the both city's suit industry are The Suit Industry Association.The agencies in Shanghai and Nanjing all adopt the governing system,and the agency in shanghai has the council,the standing directors and the supervisory board which is not included in Nanjing' agency,and all the departments' responsibilities are clear.The management regulations of Shanghai's agency is more comprehensive compared to Nanjing.The election and resolution are democratic in both cities agency.In the comparison of the effect of the agencies of shanghai and Nanjing,the agencies of Shanghai and Nanjing all maintain the market stability through requiring the shops to join the agency,making industry rules and unified price,provide all kind of service including education which is not provided by Nanjing's agency,and reflect the demands to the government.The agencies also help solving problems like communicating with the labour union which the agency of shanghai do better than that of Nanjing.It was found out that the Hong Band western suit industry in shanghai and Nanjing have the same and the respective characteristics.The analysis and comparative study on the Hong Band western suit industry of Shanghai and Nanjing makes up the shortages of the studies of the garment industry in Nanjing.
