The Scientific Knowledge In Progress

Progress was a journal launched by Chinese Young Men’s Christian Association in 1911,which aimed at upper class and to develop causes and influences of YMCA in China.It paid more attention to spread new knowledge especially scientific knowledge.So this thesis made a study on the scientific knowledge in Progress,including summarizing its characteristics and analyzing its causes and influences.Firstly,this thesis generally introduced Progress in founding process,main purpose,column setup,sales and editors.As a YMCA’s journal.Progress was sold abroad and had an impact on intellectuals at that time.It pursued to spread appropriate new knowledge justly and mildly rather than discuss religions.Furthermore,it regarded the science and industry as important topic and set the scientific news column as a fixed column,which indicated it thought highly of scientific knowledge.In addition,all Chinese editors of Progress’s own is a prominent feature distinguished from other Christian journals.Therefore,this journal can reflect some special opinions about Chinese society at that time.Secondly,this thesis combed and analyzed the scientific knowledge in Progress.This journal insisted that science is the foundation of industry while industry is foundation of prosperity,so it attached importance to the science’s influences to industry development and introduced a lot of scientific knowledge and inventions applied to industry.Besides,this journal also introduced personal and public hygienic knowledge,which tried to improved social customs by means of forming good sanitary habits and develop hygiene cause.Moreover,Progress introduced a lot of technological inventions in daily life in order to show the modern lifestyle.It also emphasized to cultivate occupational sense and develop vocational education.These are expressions that the journal transmitted modern civilization concepts.It is obvious that Progress had achieved its original purpose for spreading scientific knowledge to promote industry development.But beyond that,this journal thought more of the influences of scientific knowledge to personal progress.Finally,this thesis discussed the causes and influences that Progress spread scientific knowledge.It is conformed to practical needs in the transition period of Chinese society and a method to arouse public progressive thoughts.The Progress paid attention to scientific knowledge and tried to spread it,it is a kind of practice of not only YMCA’s intellectual education but also Chinese modernization by editors.As Chinese Christian intellectual,these editors were influenced by evangelicalism and sense of social responsibility.They regarded scientific knowledge as the important means of character building for social progress.This idea resulted from the evangelicalism influence and Chinese social demands,and embodied that Progress editors tried to figure out the problem of Chinese modernization in the view of man.They hope to realize the personal modernization which laid the foundation for the thought about ’saving the nation from character.
