We investigate the parton distribution functions(PDFs)of the pion and the kaon using the framework of the basis light front quantization(BLFQ).We consider the light front wave functions(LFWFs)obtained by diagonalizing the effective Hamiltonian con-sisting of the holographic QCD confinement potential, the longitudinal confinement, and the color singlet Nambu-Jona-Lasinio(NJL)interactions.The valence quark PDF and the structure function(in large x range)of the pion, after QCD evolution, are consistent with the experimental data from the E615 experiment at Fermilab as well as the ZEUS and the H1 experiments at DESY-HERA,respectively.The ratio of the up quark PDF of the kaon to that of the pion is in agreement with the NA3 experiment at CERN.We also evaluate the four lowest nontrivial moments of the valence quark PDFs for the pion and the kaon, and the results of the pion are in good agreement with results from the global fit, from lattice QCD and from phenomenological models. We also investigate the cross section for the pion-nucleus induced Drell-Yan process with pion PDFs from BLFQ,supplemented by the PDFs of the target nuclei.
