Research On Design Management Performance Evaluation Index Of EPC General Contractor Firms

EPC(Engineering-Procurement-Construction)general contracting mode has been widely applied in the field of Engineering construction,and design management is the core of project management under EPC mode.But at present,there are few studies on the performance of design management of EPC general contractor firms,and a completely system of performance evaluation index has not been established.Therefore,it is of great significance to carry out this research.Firstly,the thesis reviewed the research status about EPC general contract design management and performance evaluation at home and abroad.And then summarized the life cycle theory,value engineering theory and performance theory which were necessary for the thesis.Firstly,26 design management performance indexes were identified by exhaustive literature review and interviews.Secondly,a questionnaire was made based on these 26 indexes,and then the questionnaire was distributed to people who had EPC general contracting experience,and 153 valid questionnaires were finally collected.At last,descriptive statistics analysis,exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to analyze the questionnaire data.The results of descriptive statistical analysis showed that the significant performance evaluation indexes included "the implementation of the whole process of design","the project cost control degree ","the completeness and accuracy of design information provided by the owner","the technical level of designers" and "the training of inter-disciplinary talents".The exploratory factor analysis extracted 7 key performance indicators from 26 indicators,which were "adaptability of design management to general contracting mode","quality of design results","perfection of owner's management system","comprehensive quality of designers","risk control level","perfection of design system" and "design control effect".Using structural equation model to do confirmatory factor analysis,the result showed that adaptability of design management to general contracting mode had an impact on design control effect,perfection of design system had an impact on risk control level.At the same time,comprehensive quality of designers,design control effect and risk control level had significant impact on the quality of design results.Perfection of owner's management system had no significant effect on quality of design results.The 7 indicators mentioned above were interrelated through different relationship paths and constituted the overall framework of design management performance evaluation.In the thesis,factor analysis method was used to form the performance evaluation index system of EPC general contractor design management,the theory of performance evaluation was enriched,also the basis for future research on evaluation and improvement of design management performance were provided.The relevant strategies combined with the specific indexes could help EPC general contractor firms identifying the key points.Also it could help them improving the design management performance and enhancing their strength.
