Bayi Steel intends to optimize the raw material structure by the local abundant resource after reconstructing the COREX furnace from BaoSteel, which results in rebuilding the charging model, given that burden distribution has a direct influence on industrial production of iron.In order to reveal dominant factors in the process of burden distribution, research on physical properties of raw particles and packing characteristics under particular circumstances,as basic research,is of great importance.Based on the COREX process of Bayi Steel, this paper has carried out experiments and DEM simulations of packing of raw materials containing pellet, coke and coal, providing various parameters for COREX process and discovering the law of packing.Essential physical properties of raw materials, including size distribution, apparent and bulk density, static friction coefficient, restitution coefficient, elastic and shear modulus and Poisson's ratio have been carefully measured, which might have effects on packing.Packing experiments on unary, binary and ternary mixture of pellet, coke and coal has been carried out to obtain basic information as angle of repose and porosity.DEM simulation has also been implemented.Simulation based on non-spherical particle model combined with experiments, successfully provides angle of repose and porosity of packing of binary and ternary mixture of pellet, coke and coal.Through the spherical particle model,we have revealed the effects of rolling friction coefficient, size distribution and material properties on packing. In brief, simulation and experiment offer accurate information of burden distribution of COREX process, which might be instructive in industrial production.
