At present,China has become the largest CO2 emitter in the world.CO2 emission discharged in China will continue to grow in the near future.Carbon emissions have been incorporated as a binding indicator into national development strategy plans,Carbon emission reduction is a key work by China' s iron and steel industry. In order to deal with CO2 emission reduction scientifically and explore a low carbon development model for iron and steel industry, previous researches mainly focused on planning indirect carbon emission reduction pathway through energy saving measures.Few researches put efforts on direct carbon emission reduction methods such as carbon capture technology, and most of them overlooked the investigation on comprehensive direct and indirect emission reduction potential from an system cost optimization perspective, and the studies were lack of planning of reduction system for an integrated iron/steel plant under the complex competition or coexistence relationship among of multiple reduction technologies. Therefore,in this research thesis, carbon emission reduction technologies suitable for iron/steel industry were reviewed and characterized from the aspects of technological advancement, technical performance and economical performance. The technical and economic performance of carbon capture technologies suitable for an integrated iron/steel industry were particularly analyzed. An optimization model for supporting emission reduction of integrated iron/steel industry was developed to plan emission reduction system with carbon capture technology as an option with a least-cost system objective. The impact of emission reduction target under different scenarios on emission reduction system was analyzed to provide a scientific basis for decision support of an integrated iron/steel emission reduction system.Through a case study based on an integrated iron/steel plant in China, the applicability of developed model was demonstrated. It is indicated by result analysis, with the more and more emission reduction pressure on iron/steel industry in China, the reduction cost by indirect energy saving technologies would be more and more high;while with the development of capture technologies, the carbon capture technologies would take more reduction task and could be the major technical option for China's iron/steel industry to achieve its emission reduction by large scale.
