The south-eastern slope in Yuanbaoshan Surface Mine belongs to the typical dip bedded slopes, and the landslide has happened in the mining course. To insure the normal production of the mine, the Yingjin River in the center of the stope will be shift, and the channel will be placed on the south-eastern slope and the inner dump,so some new requirements is put forwards for the south-eastern slope stability. It is very significative to study on the stability of the south-eastern slope systematically for the safety of the river, the coal's mining and the surrounding installations. In this paper, the failure modes of the south-eastern slope were determined by analysis of the geologic conditions.Based on the ultimate balance theory and starting with the difference of the positions and the shape of the multiple weaker layers,an optimization method for dip bedded slope shape by steps was taken out,by which the slope shape of each areas were designed, then the slope stability for the designed limits were checked. The displacement distribution and deformation and failure when the south-eastern slope was instability were simulated by FLAC3D,then the failure mechanism was discovered. It is shown that the failure mode of the south-eastern slope is cutting-bedding sliding along the dipped weaker layer. The stable angles from section 24 to section 27 the south slope are respectively 19°,18°,14°and 18°and the stable angles from section 5 to section 7 the eastern slope are respectively 13°,16°and 19°.The south-eastern slope for the designed limits can mainly meet the safety requirements.
