Carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP)has high specific strength,high specific modulus,high hardness,high damping,high temperature resistance,corrosion resistance and other excellent characteristics,making it widely used in aerospace,aircraft,defense,automotive industries,etc.And the application field is continuously expanding.The 13 th Five-Year Plan clearly puts forward the importance of developing carbon fiber and its composite materials.However,conventional processing methods have the problems,such as delamination,cracking,fiber burrs,fiber pullout,short tool life,and high processing cost.Therefore,this paper proposes WEDM for processing CFRP,exploring the characteristics and providing theoretical basis and guidance for actual processing.First,the discharge characteristics and impedance characteristics of CFRP were analyzed by single-pulse discharge experiments,and the discharge voltage was measured.Then,a single-pulse discharge temperature field simulation was performed.Due to the anisotropy of the material,two models,the vertical direction and the parallel direction,were established.Both Joule heat and Gaussian heat sources were applied.The difference in temperature field caused by the anisotropy of the material,the erosion of carbon fiber and resin,and the cause of heat affected were studied theoretically.Then,the processing characteristics of CFRP in different directions were studied by single-pulse discharge experiments and WEDM experiments,and the simulation results of temperature field were verified.First,the morphology of the single-pulse discharge craters in different directions was measured,then the single-pulse discharge process in different directions was observed by a high-speed camera.Finally,the machining speed,the kerf width and the processing quality in different directions were studied by WEDM experiments,and drew relevant conclusions.Finally,the WEDM characteristics of CFRP of plain woven were studied by single and multiple WEDM experiments.First,the effects of the main machining parameters such as machining polarity,pulse interval,pulse width,peak current,power supply voltage,servo reference voltage,and servo feed speed on machining speed and machining quality were studied bay single cutting experiments.Based On this,multiple cutting experiments were carried out to study the effect of multiple cutting on the machining quality and shape precision.It is found that better machining results can be achieved by multiple cutting under large offset,and the gear samples is machined.
