Slope stability analysis has always been one of the important topics in geotechnical engineering research. In particular, the study of the stability of open pit slopes has always been a key technology to ensure the safe production of open pit mines. In our country, many large-scale open-pit mines have formed high and steep artificial slopes after decades of mining. The stability of the slope has become one of the important issues that restrict the safe mining of open-pit mines, which is directly related to the economic benefits and safe production of open-pit mining. Therefore,it is of great theoretical and practical significance to deepen the research on the failure mode and stability of open-pit slopes.Due to the impact of the Yanmen'ao fault belt,The northern slope rock mass of JDC open pit mine is loosely crushed and has poor stability.Based on data collection, field surveys, exploration and laboratory test results, this paper studied the engineering geological characteristics of the Yanmen'ao fault belt and the northern slope. This paper estimated the mechanical parameters of northern slope sock mass by applying the Generalized Hoek-Brown Criterion. This paper analyzed the characteristics and influencing factors of the deformation and damage of the north slope, and analyzed the failure modes of the north slope by using the stereographic projection and numerical simulation methods.By using Geo-Slope and MIDAS GTS NX software, the limit equilibrium method and finite element strength reduction method were used to calculate the stability coefficient of the northern slope in natural and storm conditions. The research indicates that the north slope rock mass is mainly broken structure and poor mechanical properties, and is prone to instability failure. The slope failure modes mainly include dumping, collapse, and potential overall arc sliding. The northern slope is in a basically stable state under natural conditions and is under unstable in storm conditions. In this paper, the research results on the failure mode and stability of the northern slope are basically consistent with the site, and it has certain reference significance for the stability evaluation of the open-pit northern slope.
