Since 1990 s,much attention has been paid to waste separation in China.Until now, results indicate little optimism.Years of propagandizing raises most people's consciousness of the importance of waste separation on the environment and resources. However,it has met with many difficulties through implementing. The proposal of forcing people to separate household waste in residential areas has not yet passed the discussion stage, but surely around the corner. Therefore,it is definitely important and necessary for the researches to develop an applicable separation programme in residential areas which will achieve further progress in the separation quality and eventually the target of the construction of Beautiful China. This study focuses on the household waste source separation in residential areas. The household waste characteristics and the inclination and attitude of residents towards to household waste separation investigated through questionnaire surveys in Shenzhen,Kunming,Dongguan and Changsha are analyzed to discuss the reasons of waste separation dilemma.Five methods are firstly made, also the separation evaluation index system of household waste is established.Combining the subjective weight based on the CRITICEntropy value method and objective weight based on AHM,evaluation and choice of the plans are made.Taking Changsha as the study case, this paper establishes a Set Pair Analysis(SPA)model to analyze and compare the different separation methods. The results of the threemonth site experiments conducted in Yuelu District and Furong District of Changsha are used to optimize the model.Final result reveals that the appropriate household waste source separation method in residential areas of Changsha is the two-category method(food waste & other waste).
